Fidesz – Hungarian Civic Alliance

Fidesz – Hun­gar­i­an Civic Alliance is a nation­al con­ser­v­a­tive polit­i­cal par­ty in Hun­gary, led by Prime Min­is­ter Vik­tor Orbán. Orig­i­nal­ly found­ed in 1988 as a lib­er­al youth move­ment, Fidesz trans­formed in the late 1990s into a dom­i­nant force of right-wing pop­ulism and nation­al con­ser­vatism. The par­ty empha­sizes Hun­gar­i­an sov­er­eign­ty, Chris­t­ian cul­tur­al iden­ti­ty, and tra­di­tion­al fam­i­ly val­ues, while main­tain­ing a crit­i­cal stance toward the Euro­pean Union, lib­er­al democ­ra­cy, and immi­gra­tion. Fidesz frames itself as a bul­wark against what it describes as glob­al­ist influ­ence and left­ist ide­ol­o­gy, often invok­ing the pro­tec­tion of nation­al tra­di­tions and Chris­t­ian civ­i­liza­tion. Under Orbán’s lead­er­ship, Fidesz has cen­tral­ized polit­i­cal pow­er, restruc­tured Hungary’s media and judi­cia­ry, and posi­tioned itself at the fore­front of the Euro­pean nation­al con­ser­v­a­tive move­ment, advo­cat­ing for an “illib­er­al democ­ra­cy” model.
