Muslim Brotherhood Terrorist Designation Act Reintroduced In The US Senate

Israeli media is report­ing that a U.S. Sen­a­tor last month rein­tro­duced an act to des­ig­nate the Mus­lim Broth­er­hood a ter­ror­ist orga­ni­za­tion. Accord­ing to the Jerusalem Post:

Decem­ber 3, 2020 Sen­a­tor Ted Cruz (R‑TX) rein­tro­duced the Mus­lim Broth­er­hood Ter­ror­ist Des­ig­na­tion Act this week, his office announced on Wednes­day. The act urges the US State Depart­ment to des­ig­nate the Mus­lim Broth­er­hood as a For­eign Ter­ror­ist Orga­ni­za­tion (FTO).

“I am proud to rein­tro­duce this bill and to advance America’s fight against rad­i­cal Islam­ic ter­ror­ism,” said Cruz. “I com­mend the cur­rent administration’s work call­ing ter­ror­ism by its name and com­bat­ing the spread of this potent threat, and I look for­ward to receiv­ing the addi­tion­al infor­ma­tion this new bill requests from the Depart­ment of State.

Cruz, a mem­ber of the Sen­ate For­eign Rela­tions Com­mit­tee, first intro­duced the Mus­lim Broth­er­hood Ter­ror­ist Des­ig­na­tion Act in 2015 and rein­tro­duced it again in 2017. The Trump Admin­is­tra­tion worked to des­ig­nate the Broth­er­hood an FTO in 2019 but the Pen­ta­gon, career nation­al secu­ri­ty staff, gov­ern­ment lawyers, and diplo­mat­ic offi­cials have opposed the move, voic­ing legal and pol­i­cy objec­tions. The full text of the leg­is­la­tion does not clar­i­fy whether or if the Glob­al Mus­lim Broth­er­hood would some­how be encom­passed or whether it would apply sole­ly to the Egypt­ian organization.
