European Muslim Brotherhood Youth Umbrella Holds Conference With EU Politicians

On 21 Sep­tem­ber 2022, “Euro­pean Action Day Against Islam­o­pho­bia,” the Forum of Euro­pean Mus­lim Youth and Stu­dent Orga­ni­za­tions (FEMYSO) orga­nized an anti-Islam­o­pho­bia con­fer­ence at the Euro­pean Par­lia­ment in Brus­sels. Accord­ing to a FEMYSO invi­ta­tion to the event:

This is an annu­al event com­mem­o­rat­ing the vic­tims of Islam­o­pho­bia, reflect­ing on gaps and good prac­tices in Europe when it comes to tack­ling Islam­o­pho­bia, and agree­ing on joint actions with rel­e­vant stakeholders.

The live-streamed event was addressed by FEMYSO Pres­i­dent Hande Tan­er and FEMYSO Head of Cam­paigns Nourhene Mah­mou­di. It fea­tured con­tri­bu­tions by rep­re­sen­ta­tives of sev­er­al Euro­pean civ­il soci­ety and human rights orga­ni­za­tions with ties to the Glob­al Mus­lim Broth­er­hood (GMB), including:

• Nadia Asri, Head of Net­work Devel­op­ment at the Euro­pean Net­work Against Racism

• Loub­na Reguig, Pres­i­dent of Etu­di­ants Musul­mans de France

The event also fea­tured an address by Iratxe Gar­cia Perez MEP, the Pres­i­dent of the Euro­pean Parliament’s pro­gres­sive Social­ists and Democ­rats group (S&D). Oth­er con­trib­u­tors includ­ed Ital­ian S&D MEP Bran­do Benifei and Özge­can Kara, Sec­re­tary-Gen­er­al of the Fed­er­a­tion of Young Euro­pean Greens.

FEMYSO is the youth/student arm of the Coun­cil of Euro­pean Mus­lims, for­mer­ly known as the Fed­er­a­tion of Islam­ic Orga­ni­za­tions in Europe, known to rep­re­sent the Mus­lim Broth­er­hood in Europe. One of the impor­tant lead­ers of FEMYSO over the years has been Ger­man GMB leader Ibrahim El-Zay­at, and in recent times, its lead­er­ship has also been drawn from the fam­i­ly of impor­tant GMB lead­ers. Almost all FEMYSO mem­ber orga­ni­za­tions are also tied to the Euro­pean Mus­lim Broth­er­hood. Over the years, FEMYSO has devel­oped rela­tion­ships with the Coun­cil of Europe, the Euro­pean Com­mis­sion, and many oth­er sig­nif­i­cant orga­ni­za­tions at the Euro­pean and inter­na­tion­al levels.

The Glob­al Influ­ence Oper­a­tions Report (GIOR) has long cov­ered GMB efforts to dom­i­nate the Euro­pean dis­course on anti-Mus­lim racism and Islam­o­pho­bia. FEMYSO is heav­i­ly fea­tured in an August 2022 GIOR report titled “Europe and the Glob­al Mus­lim Broth­er­hood Part 2: Lob­by­ing & Polit­i­cal Impacts,” which ana­lyzes GMB lob­by­ing efforts at the exec­u­tive and leg­isla­tive bod­ies of the Euro­pean Union.
